Vilnius Meeting
The convening meeting was held in the Lithuanian Parliament. Democracy developments in Eastern Europe where discussed as well as the future role and activities of the Community of Democracies Parliamentary Forum. Mr. Emanuelis Zingeris, Chairman of the Parliamentary Forum and Mr. Dan Burton, Chairman of the US House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia, Committee on Foreign Affairs opened the event. H. E. Mrs. Tsetska Tsacheva, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria; Mr. Markus Meckel, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of GDR, Germany; and Prof. Vytautas Lansdbergis, Member of European Parliament, gave speeches concerning recent democratic developments in Eastern Europe. Mr. Roel von Meijenfeldt, European Partnership for Democracy; Mr. Carl Gershman, President of the National Endowment for Democracy; and Hon. Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, First Deputy Speaker of the Afghanistan Senate, discussed the potential role of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy in providing effective democratic assistance worldwide.
